Mountain Lace
I altered “Fancy Knitted Stripe #4” from 1892 Butterick’s The Art of Knitting, p.11 due to an awkward-looking spot in the pattern. I added 2 more rows, 1 extra stitch in the repeat and flipped it upside down! The new version has 10 pattern rows with a multiple of 10 stitches. All wrong-side rows are purl across.
This pattern is worked from the top down because I couldn’t get a good-looking mountain from the bottom up. I imagine the smooth side of the mountain is for skiers; the other side of the mountain is for climbers. The swatch is 4 inches wide at gauge.
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
50 yards of #10 cotton crochet thread will make 10 inches of a 30-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
