Munster Socks
Socktober Sale 20% off ANY Woollen Knots sock design during the month of October (no code needed - until Oct 31, 2359 GMT
The Munster Socks are part of the “Provinces of Ireland” sock
designs, all using traditional Aran stitches to create interesting
socks to knit and wear. In the Munster socks, a diamond
twisted cable runs down the centre of the sock front with
smaller cables and reverse stocking stitch at either side. A
cable also runs down the back of the leg. The diamond cable
in aran knits represented wealth.
The socks are written for knitting in the magic loop method,
but can be easily adapted to suit double-pointed needles or a
short circular. They are knit from the cuff down with a
traditional heel flap and gusset. However, the heel can be
substituted for your own choice of heel.
Folklore Yarns “Faerie Folk” Donegal Tweed is used in colours
representative of the Ulster coat of arms. The Faerie Folk yarn
produces a really warm and durable fabric. The pattern has
written instructions and a chart. It is knit using a magic loop
but can be adapted with dpns or a short circular.
Size: To fit approx.:
Small 7”/18 cm foot circumference
Medium 8”/20 cm foot circumference
Large 9”/23 cm foot circumference
Foot and leg length can be easily adjusted.
Needles: 3.5 mm (US 4) 80 cm circular needles or dpns (or size needed to get gauge) * The nature of cables will pull the knitted fabric tighter, if you find the recommended needle size produces a
fabric that is too tight for you, please go up a needle size.
Gauge: 22 sts x 28 rows per 4 inches using 3.5 mm (US 4) needle over cable pattern.
Yarn: DK sock yarn (approx.) MC: 80 (90) 100g 192yd/176m (208yds/198m) 241yds/220m and CC: 10g/24yds/22m CC for toe
The yarn used for the sample socks is Folklore Yarns Faerie Folk Donegal Mohair Tweed 100g (240 yds/220 m).
The medium size used (approx.) MC - 80g : 2639 Selkie and CC for toes - 10g : 2625 Crobh Dearg.
