Crochet Terminology: US crochet terminology

This is a pattern for a simple beanie-style hat that is combined with a scarf. The “Nancy” hat is designed for #5 “Bulky” yarn for 3 different sizes (S, M, L) and can be decorated with an optional pompom or a tassel at the top. The pattern can be followed by either left-handed or right-handed crocheters. Where necessary, specific notes are included for left- and right-handed crocheters.
This hat is called “Nancy” because this style was requested by a very special young lady, whose name is Nancy.
This hat works up quickly, and uses only three types of stitches: half-double crochet (HDC), front-post double-crochet (FPDC) and back-post double-crochet (BPDC).

The “Nancy” hat is offered in 3 sizes (S, M, L), based on the following measurements:
S (Small - Child): finished hat circumference: 17–‍17.5” (43–‍44.5 cm), providing a snug fit for an 18–‍20” (45.5–‍51 cm) head.
M (Medium - Adult): finished hat circumference: 18.5–‍19” (47–‍48 cm), providing a snug fit for a 21–‍22” (53–‍56 cm) head.
L (Large- Large Adult): finished hat circumference: 20–‍20.5” (51–‍52 cm), providing a snug fit for a 23–‍24” (58.5–‍61 cm) head.
Materials and supplies:
• Bulky weight (#5) yarn
• 7.0mm crochet hook or other size needed to achieve gauge
• Tapestry needle to weave in the ends
• Stitch markers
Circular gauge: 3 rounds of HDC worked into a flat circle should be a 4” (10 cm) diameter circle.

Approximate yarn amounts, using #5 bulky weight yarn:
Small size: 300g/10.5oz –‍ 300 meters/ 328yards
Medium size: 340g/11.6oz –‍ 340 meters/372yards
Large size: 380g/13.5oz –‍ 380 meters/416yards
