This hat pattern was designed to showcase the natural colours of Shetland wool yarn using traditional Shetland motifs. It is worked in the round from the ribbed band up to the crown. Use undyed yarns for a similar look or choose four contrasting colours for a modern take on the traditional tam o’shanter.

The tam is sized to fit an average woman’s head of approximately 22.5” (57cm) circumference. The band measures 19”(48cm) while the circumference at the widest part of the hat is approximately 27.5” (67cm). Pattern tension is 7 stitches and 9 rows per inch (2.5cm) measured over stranded colourwork, blocked.

You will need:
175 yds (160m) fingering weight yarn in Main Colour (MC)
120 yds (110m) fingering weight yarn in Contrast Colour 1 (CC1)
80 yds (73m) fingering weight yarn in Contrast Colour 2 (CC2)
50 yds (46m) fingering weight yarn in Contrast Colour 3 (CC3)
2.75mm (US 2) knitting needles for knitting in the round, or size needed to achieve pattern tension
Stitch markers (one to mark start of round, 5 others to mark pattern repeats if desired)
Darning needle
Dinner plate and beaker for blocking

You need to be able to: work stranded colourwork using a chart. The pattern uses four shades but no more than two are used in any one round. Unworked colours are either broken and rejoined or carried up inside the work.
