Necessary Expression
Charles Wellesley Emerson “believed that it was possible for individuals to train themselves physically, mentally, morally, and spiritually to achieve ‘perfect altruism,’ a state in which their
lives were focused solely on helping and elevating others. … Emerson believed that the key was studying and perfecting the various methods of expression, as it was through expression
that ‘the attributes of soul are channelled.’” Emerson College’s motto has remained unchanged since its founding. This bottom-up knit design provides mix-and-match options for
the maker to select motifs representing the arts and modes of expression central to Emerson’s motto. The design can be worn as a cowl or sewn over a pillow form to create a small throw
pillow.
“This is the power of art: The power to transcend our own self-interest, our solipsistic zoom-lens on life, and relate to the world and each other with more integrity, more curiosity, more wholeheartedness.” Maria Popova
This pattern can be knit with any two worsted weight yarns of your choosing. Gauge may vary based on yarn selected. Sample was knit using Cascade Superwash 220 Merino left over from other projects.
