New York State Sampler Cowl
LEARN ABOUT NEW YORK STATE WHILE MAKING A COWL
Starting with the Crown of the Statue of Liberty and ending with Niagara Falls, it is first knit flat as a rectangle measuring about 13” x 34” (after blocking) and has I-cord edges. This rectangle will get turned into a cowl by putting the two ends together with a Kitchener stitch.
Yarn: fingering weight yarn
White yarn - about 80 grams or 300 yards,
20 grams (about 80 yards) of each; green, red,
blue, yellow, and light-yellow orange yarn
Needles: Size 2 circular needles 20” – 24” needles to start, then
Size 3 or 4 circular needles - 24” for after Statue of Liberty
LACE NEEDLES ARE RECCOMMENDED
Gauge: Gauge for the crown (top panel) use size 2 for
garter stitch (26 sts X 28 rows over 4”).
Gauge for the rest of the cowl, in stockinette stitch, is
Stitch gauge; between 24sts and 27st over 4”.
Row gauge is between 32 and 36 rows over 4”.
Notions: 40 beads, 5 removable stitch markers, super
dental floss(!) or a crochet hook size 10 and more
stitch makers when you think you need them
