This is measured to fit a newborn baby. You could make it for older children as long as you chain for the size of the head. Less then 1 skein of yarn is needed, or small amounts of multiple skeins. I used I Love This Yarn in both of my caps. I crochet tight, so although I used an N hook, most would use a smaller hook but it should not matter as you are measuring the starting dh.
