Ngaire (pronounced ny-ree, rhymes with fiery) is a very fancy pair of mitts, and is named in honor or a very dear friend who has a particular passion for such things. She (and I agree with her) likes them long, to keep her arms warm too. The length of Ngaire is adjustable, so you can tailor them to your own liking, but knit long they can be worn as an under-layer and they really do provide wonderful warmth and support to cold and tired wrists.

Ngaire is worked in reverse to many mitt patterns; the cast on is at the top edge. This is done so that you can make them as long as possible with the yarn you have available. Despite looking reasonably complicated, the pattern is fairly straightforward: you do need to work from a chart but only over twenty-seven stitches, so it doesn’t take long and it’s easy to keep track of where you are. You’ll find this pattern knits up surprisingly quickly.

Pattern debuted as instalment three of the Vintage Purls Summer Sock Yarn Club 2013.
