A cozy cowl worked on a large hook, alternates front and back loop only single crochets for a luscious texture that whips up in a flash.

One of Nine Crochet designs inspired by The Secret Stitch, the first novel in a new fiber fiction series from C. Jane Reid, tracing the evolution of crochet. Each design is named for a character from the story, with quotes that inspired that accessory.

Niall watched me warily as I approached.
“I want you to have this,” I told him, holding out the cowl I’d finished earlier in the week. I’d treated it with wool oil already.
Niall looked surprised. “Why?”
“To keep you safe.”
He looked dubious, but I was prepared for that. “I know you don’t believe me about the beast. You don’t have to. But I do wish you might wear this anyway if you go into the woods. At least when it’s cool outside.”
Niall took the cowl, turning it over in his hands. “It’s finely made,” he conceded.
