My friend received this beautiful PURL SOHO yarn in the post and was not able to use it. Returning wool orders in Ireland is expensive, so instead she handed it to me with a broken heart and said “I am sure you will do something nice with this”.

I combined the linen/alpaca/wool mix with a silk mohair for added luster and fluffiness and designed an elongated honeycomb stitch for pointy waves which are of a variegated blue at the base and white at the top. The shawl ends are pleated to echo the sea shore and I completed it with (optional) petrol pleats along the edge to add stability.

The scarf is worked in two halves, which I joined with a 3-needle bind-off, and it can easily be widened or narrowed by adding or omitting some “waves”. Any fingering weight yarn can be used but I prefer yarn with some elasticity and a “halo”. My version is silky with a full and dense body due to the fibre blend, yet it has light and fluffy “waves” and is extremely warm. I used 1.5 Purl SOHO skeins and near to one kid silk skein of each colour.

This pattern is of advanced knitting level (in my opinion). It requires slipped stitches, pleating, and the joining of both halves. I have tried to explain each step here but please feel free to use any stitches you prefer yourself. Please contact me if you have any difficulty in mastering your stitches, and I will give you any assistance I can.

I received many “wow, that’s beautiful” comments wearing “Noeleen dreams of SOHO”, and it is my perfect all-rounder every day accessory. I hope you will enjoy it!
