A quick, easy, and fun hotpad that features a traditional Nordic star. Front and back pieces are knit separately, then sewn together. Makes a great holiday gift!

Size: makes two 7” x 7” hotpads

Needles: US size 5 double point or single point needles

Yarn: 3 total skeins Lion Brand® Yarn, Kitchen Cotton (or other 100% cotton yarn); one skein in color A (here, I used “cayenne”) and 2 skeins in color B (here, I used “vanilla”)

Instructions:

For front side: With A, cast on 31 stitches. Working in pattern, knit the right side and purl the wrong side, slipping the first stitch of every row. Make sure that the stranded knitting doesn’t pull in. Cast off loosely.

For back side: With B, cast on 31 stitches. Work in stockinette stitch for 31 rows (yes, you will be knitting the right and the wrong side). Cast off loosely.

Weave in your loose ends and sew the two pieces together using the blanket stitch. If you choose, you can also sew a loop of i-cord to the corner for hanging.

Repeat for second hotpad.
