When you spend your summer days by the sea – especially by the Baltic sea – there is always wind. So when the evening draws near you need something to throw over without too much thinking that will keep the warmth of the sun on your skin a little longer. Nordwind is a maritime yet very feminine shrug with a lace pattern throughout and neat I-cord edges incorporating a slip-stitch pattern that mirrors the triangles in the lace pattern. The lace pattern was highly inspired by boats sailing on the sea, it is quite addictive and will keep you knitting triangle after triangle. The shrug can be worn in multiple ways.

This pattern is the first part of a small pattern-collection in form of a ebook inspired by the sea.

The shrug is constructed by sewing a large square together. First the square is knitted on the bias, then there is a little sewing and you knit on the edges. Though there is a difference between neck and hem, the shrug can be worn with either side up or even with a nice shawl-pin as a cowl around your neck! The pattern comes with both charted and written instructions.

As the sample has been successfully tried on by many friends who all wear different sizes and it always had a good fit around the shoulders it remains a one size pattern. However the size could also be changed by choosing a smaller needle or a dk/worsted-weight-yarn with a bigger needle. The sample was knitted in Yak fingering by welthase, colourways Tuareg and Unique Dots, which has a great drape and a nice sheen due to its silk content. I would recommend using semi-solid or solid colours to show off the lace pattern and some yarn which has a good drape. So if you can’t get your hands on the original yarn I would recommend some merino/silk blend, linen blend or bfl/silk blend.

What you need:

  • approx. 1200 meters (1312 yards) in a fingering yarn of your choice in one colour or approx. 1000 meters (1129 yards) and 200 meters (183 yards) in another colour (C2)
  • sample shown in 3 skeins welthase Yak fingering – 2.5 in Tuareg (C1) and 0.5 in Unique Dots (C2)

Gauge: 2 squares in lace pattern after blocking = 11 cm square

The pattern has been professionally tech-edited.
