Many years ago my mum bought a commercially made jacket when in Norway on holiday. She asked if I could make her something similar but different using Scottish yarn, and this is the result.
The body of the jacket is bordered by a traditional “snowflake” motif with a background of small crosses. The snowflake is repeated around the top of the dropped sleeves and a contrasting border at the cuffs, hem, collar and front bands also appears as a saddle on the shoulders. The edge to edge front bands are fastened with traditional Scandinavian style clasp fasteners. The garment is knitted in the round with steeks for the front and armholes, and the sleeves are picked up and knitted downwards. Optional afterthought pockets are added. The pattern is described in four sizes.
The yarn I used is Alice Starmore’s Hebridean 3 ply which is a heavy double knitting which I would say is close to Aran weight. For the second size you need 8 50g skeins each of colours A and B and one skein of contrast colour C.
You will need one gauge size long circular needle, two below-guage sized long circular needles, and needles of your choice for working small circumferences in the round at both gauge and below-gauge.
A gauge of 20 stitches and 23 rows to 4cm makes a dense, warm fabric. I achieved this using 4.5mm needles.
Update 9 Feb 2022. The clasps I used on the jacket are quite heavy and my mum has reported that over time they have pulled the front of the jacket down somewhat. She has mitigated this by stitching some grosgrain ribbon inside the collar and it looks fine.
