“Not my circus, Not My Monkeys” is a Polish proverb that tells us about learning to stop worrying about what is out of our control. Because stripes are always a good idea, I wanted to create two basic striped patterns that were part of our wardrobe for day to day.

Notes on construction

Not My Monkeys is a top-down sweater with an open neckline and an easy circular yoke. I used two yarn bases for the solid and semi-sheer effect (merino and mohair). It is a long sweater with a beautiful drape. The body and sleeves ribbing ending is twisted to create stability and a more “draped” effect, and the neck ribbing is simple to make a smooth transition from the neckline ribbing to the body.

Yarn

Amounts may vary because of the type of yarn, personal gauge, and any changes made to the pattern.

MC (merino): 391 (408, 425, 442, 451, 468) (476, 489, 502, 515) m / 428 (447, 465, 484, 494, 512) (521, 535, 549, 564) yds weight yarn on a merino base or similar.

CC (mohair): 387 (406, 420, 437, 444, 463) (469, 482, 497, 510) m / 424 (445, 460, 478, 486, 507) (513, 528, 544, 558) yds lace yarn on a silky mohair base or similar.

Suggested yarn

I decided to texture the stripes with two bases in a similar colour with different shades for this pattern. But you can also knit it with the same base to avoid the transparent effect and get a striped sweater perfect for your wardrobe background.

MC (merino): 1 (1, 1, 2, 2, 2) (2, 2, 2, 2) skeins of Tréliz, Ares, light fingering weight (100 g / 425 m; 3.53 oz / 464.79 yds; 75% Superwash Merino 25% Nylon). Colour: “Sassenach” - #brown.
CC (mohair): 1 (1, 1, 2, 2, 2) (2, 2, 2, 2) skeins of Tréliz, Poseidon, lace weight (50 g / 420 m; 1.76 oz / 459.32 yds; 75% Kid Mohair, 25% Silk). Colour: “Hakuna Matata” - #orange.

Needles

4 mm US 6 - 60 / 80 cm US 8/ 24 / 32” circular needles or the size needed to obtain the correct gauge.

Other accessories

Yarn needle, markers, contrasting yarn to put the stitches on hold or markers.

Gauge

21 stitches and 26 rows = 10 x 10 cm 4 x 4” in ST st worked IN THE ROUND on the larger needles after blocking.

Techniques

Long-tail cast-on.
Backwards loop cast-on.

Agujas

Montaje de hebra larga (“Long tail cast-on”).
Montaje en bucle hacia atrás (backward loop cast-on)
Cierre sorprendentemente elástico de Jenny (“Jenny ‘s surprisingly stretchy bind-off”).
Vueltas cortas: método alemán.
