Notre Dame de Paris
For our booklovers and literature aficionados, I’ve designed this pattern. You can use it for different purposes, I’ve used it to make a pillow cover. Make sure to use a small needle size (2 – 2.5 mm) unless you have a very large pillow!
The pattern includes the church of Notre Dame, a gargoyle and a citation of the epic novel by Victor Hugo. The book is full of beautiful citations. This one, however, captivates one of the essences of the novel. In an era in which many Gothic buildings were being destroyed, Hugo first wrote a pamflet to declare war on the demolishers of these buildings. Not much later, Notre Dame de Paris was released. The novel describes the multifaceted beauty of the cathedral in order to inspire appreciation for and contemporary meaning of gothic architecture in its readers, and to at least preserve the church on paper if it were destroyed.
In the novel, Hugo describes how architecture used to be the medium to express ideas for generation before the invention of the printing press. All other arts came together in architecture, the history of humanity can be read in it.
I hope you have as much fun creating something beautiful, inspiring and cosy with this pattern and I am curious to see what you created with it. Don’t hesitate to post and share!
