O! Sovereign Crown
By Corrado Lark

The Needs of one knitter to produce one marled, ribbed, reversed berretina-inspire beanie:

  • US 6 (4.00mm) 16” circular needle. US 7 (4.5mm) 16” circular needle. A stitch marker and a darning needle.
  • 100 grams of DK weight yarn. I used a tonal, ‘OOAK Royal Blue’ Kenyarn DK 4 Ply (231yds/100g). Also 50 grams of Fingering/sock weight yarn. I used a variegated, “Moonlit” Olann Sock (400yds/100g).
  • Gauge: 17 stitches and 24 rows for 4” of stockinette.
  • Finished Dimensions: Adult S/M: 7” wide by 9 ½” length. (Adult L): 8 ½” wide by 11” length.

Come hither, the Backstory:

This design was inspired by my friend Mike. He’s a chef at a nearby restaurant with the Instagram handle “SweetSovereign”. He makes fantastic croissants, desserts, and is definitely a knit worthy friend.

Using twisted stitches, the ribbing pops dramatically in reverse stockinette. The decreases are meant to emulate a Tudor crown. I also explored the idea of each knitter having a unique “crest” or “emblem” worked into their hat. Maybe it’s unnoticeable to most, but you can easily leave your original mark in the decreases if you’d like. I give options to skip the emblem and just knit, knit the emblem I did exactly, and has notes on how to create your own, unique emblem.
