Waves roaring towards the sand; the smell of salt on the breeze. Breathe deeply and be transported to the sea as you crochet the undulating waves of this spa headband. Subtle waves are created with stitches of different heights and highlighted with back loops only stitches that give them textured crests.

This is perfect headband to hold your hair back as you wash your face, put on make up, or apply a luxurious face mask. These work up very quickly in super bulky yarn and make a great gift! The chenille texture is luxurious and pillowy, and it’s a great project for using up leftover yarn since you don’t need much yardage.

Possible modifications: You can change up the size of the headband by changing the size of the hook, the placement of the buttonhole, the number of pattern repeats (foundation chain is a multiple of 14 +3+1 turning chain), or the weight of the yarn used. My only caveat with changing the yarn is that you shouldn’t choose something that’s going to stretch a lot when wet, as it might fall off your head.

I’ve written it in two sizes, small/medium and large/xl. The headband as I made it in chenille has a little stretch, and is also adjustable based on where you place your “buttonhole.” You can measure your head with a flexible measuring tape in exactly the position you would want the headband to be (NOT just the diameter of your head straight on, but the length around from the back bottom of your head to the top, which is probably a larger measurement than your head’s diameter; for example my head is 23.6” in diameter, but my headband measurement was 25” plus a little added for the headband to overlap itself and be fastened). Generally, the large/XL size will fit most adult heads and the small/medium size will fit children or adults/teens with smaller head sizes.

I made a version that is 24.5” finished size for a head whose measurement was 23” for a headband, using the L/XL pattern but sizing down to a 9mm (M/N) hook.

This pattern uses U.S. crochet terminology throughout.

ERRATA
When making the rounded end at the very end of the pattern, where it says work 1 sc in ch 1 space, it’s not actually a ch 1 space, it’s just the stitch in the previous row. Work the rest of the curved end as written (So the updated pattern is: 1 sc in first stitch of previous row, hdc, dc, hdc in ch 3 sp, sc in ch 1 sp, FO.) I realized that when making a second version for my sister. If you find any other errors, please let me know so I can post them and get them fixed! Thanks!!

Skill Level: Beginning Intermediate
All stitches in the pattern are beginner level basic stitches, however, chenille yarn is harder to work with and makes it harder to “read” the work and count stitches.
