This pattern employs the 8-wedge base construction of many knitted bowls. You increase in the same method, every alternate round, until the mat is as large as you want it. Four-inch diameter for a little jewelry mat takes almost no time at all; or go bigger, and fortify the product by attaching a layer of purchased felt on the underside.

I used two strands held together of the acrylic I Love This Yarn. I undoubtedly used needles smaller than U.S. 11 on the blue and cream mat made using fibers from unraveled thrift store sweaters. I love the way that one turned out, with its optional ruffled edge and classic colors. That blue I want to call “Wedgewood” blue; several decades ago, I had drapes that color in my bedroom. For the ecru edging on the Argentine model, I went to a needle size one larger than used for the mat, and I’m pretty sure I also used a new skill in “loose bind-off” by yarning over before every next knitted stitch, then passing both the previous stitch and the yarnover off together.
