This cat coaster design is no longer a secret. I originally published this as a mosaic crochet pattern in my Facebook group but have now added an interlocking crochet option as well. Both colorwork techniques include the full written pattern and charts (mosaic charts have X’s).

Interlocking Crochet
• Chart is 31 x 27
• Finished size 7.5” x 7” / 19cm x 17cm
• 5 mm hook (U.S. H/8)
• Gauge: 8 (dc, ch) x 8 rows = 4”
• Worsted weight yarn (120 yards total)
o Main color (MC) / background – 65 yards
o Accent color (AC) / cat – 55 yards

Overlay Mosaic Crochet
• Chart is 27 x 23
• Finished measurements approximately 6.75” x 5.75”
• 4.5 mm hook (US7)
• Worsted weight yarn (55 yards)
o Main color – 36 yards (background)
o Contrasting color – 19 yards (cat)
• Gauge: 16 stitches x 16 rows = 4”

The Locked Filet Mesh (LFM) interlocking crochet method uses only chain spaces and double crochets to create a mesh; two colors are worked alternately which creates the pattern.

Mosaic crochet is single crochet and double crochet stitches. The double crochet stitches cover some of the other color’s single crochet stitches to create the design. My patterns instruct you to cut your yarn at the end of each row. The back is striped but often gives a faint impression of the pattern on the front (sort of like illusion knitting). See an example here.
