My dad is an avid hunter, and he asked me to create a scarf that would cover his face, stay close to his neck, but not add too much bulk to his hunting gear. Following his specifications, I created the October Tall Cowl, an accessory that can be worn many ways and work for men or women.

This crochet pattern is worked in rows and finished with one round of border stitching. You’ll alternate between 3 basic stitch patterns, and the 3-color striping with the occasional row of BLO creates a striking look. However, the textured stitches and the even rows of the herringbone half double crochet mean that, even worked in one color, this crochet cowl will really pop.

If you’ve never done a herringbone half double crochet, don’t fear. I’ve given both written and photo instructions on how to complete it, and once you’ve mastered this crochet stitch, I think you’ll fall in love with how flat and evenly it works up. I’ve also included a photo tutorial for the invisible join, which will give your border an advanced, finished look.

Keep your eyes open this week for the addition of two more scarf patterns using these techniques!
