’ōhi’a lehua is endemic to the six largest islands of Hawai’i and is the most common native Hawaiian tree. It often is one of the first plants to take root in recent lava flows. I was inspired to create a color work pattern featuring the feathery blooms and a dark, “lava field” background after hiking across a lava-filled crater in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park - we saw hundreds and hundreds of trees at various points in their growth cycle, waving their fluffy blooms in the breeze.

The ‘ōhi’a lehua socks are knit from the cuff down and can be customized to your preferred leg and foot length. The colorwork is only available with a charted pattern at this time, so it’s recommended that you be comfortable reading and following charted instructions.

Sizes:
Adult 1 (2, 3) - sized to fit foot circumference (measured around the pad of your foot) of 7-7.5, 8-8.5, 9-9.5 inches with 1.5-2 inches of negative ease

Needles:
US 1 (2.25mm) and US 1.5 (2.5mm) circular needles for magic loop or preferred needles for sock knitting.
