Some say the old mill is haunted. Some say it’s romantic. The abandoned Cottonwood Paper Mill, tucked into a hidden hollow at the base of Big Cottonwood Canyon, has sparked Utah imaginations since a fire in 1893 left the mill a stone husk. This fully reversible crescent shawl is inspired by the enduring strength and loveliness of the mill’s remains.

YARN

You’ll need three (3) 100 g skeins of sock yarn, each at least 400 yds. When selecting colors, I recommend two solid/tonal colorways and one speckled colorway OR one solid/tonal colorways and two speckled colorways. The sample is shown with two tonals and one speckle.

Sample shown in:

Color 1 (C1): The Fawn & The Fox, Doe 80/10/10 Superwash Merino/Cashmere/Nylon. 435 yds/100 g. Colorway: Badlands

Color 2 (C2): Little Lionhead Knits, 85/15 Superwash Merino/Nylon. 437 yds/100 g. Colorway: A-Frame Cabin

Color 3 (C3): The Fawn & The Fox, Doe 80/10/10 Superwash Merino/Cashmere/Nylon. 435 yds/100 g. Colorway: McIntosh

APPROXIMATE YARDAGE

I recommend starting with a full 400 yd (or more) skein of each color.

C1: 330 yds
C2: 300 yds
C3: 240 yds

NEEDLES & NOTIONS

  • US 3/3.25 mm - Circular needle with 40” or longer cord

GAUGE

28 x 36 in Broken Rib Stitch over 4” x 4”, blocked. Gauge is not important for shawl fit; however, it will impact the yardage or amount of yarn you use.

SHAPE

This shawl is a crescent shawl. The long edge curves, creating “wings” that make this a very easy shape to wear wrapped around your neck.
