What I love about this pattern is that everyone knows the Old Shale Stitch, which is also known as The Feather and Fan Stitch. But everyone has a slightly different version of it. It’s an old Shetland pattern that has been around forever. It is as popular among knitters today as it was a century ago. For the new knitter, it’s a great beginner’s lace stitch and for the advanced knitter, it’s still very pleasing to knit. It’s also a pattern that once understood does not require great concentration to knit. A few rows of knits and purls and one row of pattern make for a simple knit that really looks a lot more complicated than it actually is.

For the beginner knitter, I encourage you to try this. Just use your markers and after you finish each section, count your stitches. I promise in no time you will have this pattern down. Its a 17 stitch pattern so you should always have 17 stitches between your markers.
