Olsen Sweater
If I was a sweater, I swear I’d be this one. My testers agreed… LOL!
- Chunky folded or mock turtleneck
- Top down raglan
- Double (or triple) strand of worsted yarn or any scrappy combo
- Easy YO increases
- Oversized fit
- THUMBHOLES!
OMG I’m in love.
This sweater is snuggly and oversized, and knits up quickly with scraps of yarn and large needles so you’ll be wearing this in a hot minute. Plus, you can try it on as you go for the perfect fit. If you really want to go for it, you can always knit one size up and knit it longer if you’ve got the yardage!
Circular Needles: US 13 (9 mm), US 15 (10 mm), US 17 (12 mm or 12.75 mm) 16” and 40” or longer cord to accommodate a large number of sts, and shorties or DPNs for the cuffs. Note, the US 15 (10 mm) were only used during the bind off to provide more stretch.
Nine sizes: XS, (S, M, L, XL) (2X, 3X, 4X, 5X) to fit bust sizes: 30”, 34”, 38”, 42”, 46”, 50”, 54”, 58”, 62” inches NOT including the 6” / 15 cm of positive ease which will be added to your bust measurement.
Approximate yardage: 330 (365, 400, 415, 450) (500, 535, 560, 590) yards of EACH YARN, so DOUBLE the amount for a total of 660 (730, 800, 830, 900) (1000, 1070, 1120, 1180) yards for sizes XS (S, M, L, XL) (2X, 3X, 4X, 5X) / XS (S, M, L, XL) (2X, 3X, 4X, 5X)
Folded turtleneck sweater: a double strand of Malabrigo Mecha in Whole Grain
Brown mock neck sweater: Rico Design Creative Melange Garzato Aran Wonderball (in Ecru 007) held together with Cascade Eco (in gunmetal 8020)
Beige Striped chunky sweater: a variety of scraps, mostly LionBrand Thick & Quick, Cascade Baby Alpaca Chunky, and mystery scraps (this is VERY thick)
(5) stitch markers or scrap yarn, one should be unique to indicate BOR
Wool needle
Gauge:
US 13 needles: 8 sts across x 12 rows in 2 x 2 ribbing = 4” /10 cm square
US 17 needles: 6 sts across x 12 rows in 2 x 2 ribbing = 4” /10 cm square. My needles were 12.75 mm. If your needles are 12 mm your gauge may be smaller.
US 17 needles: 8 sts across x 12 rows in stockinette = 4” / 10 cm square
Construction:
The sweater is knit in the round from the top down, with yarn over raglan increases to the sleeves, which are placed on hold while the body is finished. Each sleeve is then picked up and knit in the round to the chunky ribbed cuffs that include thumbholes for maximum coziness. The chunky ribbed neckline can be knit as a foldover turtleneck or a mock turtleneck, and bottom band is an easy 2x2 rib. You can knit the body longer or shorter, depending on how you roll.
