“I reflect on their struggle, their determination and the strength of their vision — to see what can be unburdened by what has been — I stand on their shoulders.”

These were Kamala Harris’ words on November 7, 2020 in her acceptance speech as our first female Vice President. An individual woman embodying so many ‘firsts,’ paused in the moment to look back at all the women who came before her - those she knew personally and those she did not. It was a moment that made my soul sing - a moment of visible progress forward worthy of great celebration.

Yet for some, the accomplishment seemed no more worthy of passing notice. The country had become obsessed with “the mittens.” I lamented on social media that this historic moment, one of joy and accomplishment had been so greatly overshadowed. In response, a white man said “The glass ceiling hasn’t been shattered yet, only raised.” Once we get a female president we can celebrate.” These words still fill me with rage to read. I no longer speak to this man, but the hurt and anger wasn’t so easily remedied. For comfort I turned to what my hands know best: knitting.

And so On the Shoulders of Those Who Came Before was born. Out of rage, out of the need for comfort, out of the things I love and fight for - and by the inspiration of beautiful yarns in the colors worn by four strong and historic women on Inauguration Day, 2021.
