Once Again
Once Again blanket is a modern, geometric blanket knitting pattern featuring a repeating square-inside-a-square design. The 24-row repeat stitch pattern uses only knit and purl stitches and is easy to knit for a confident knitter. Fully reversible, the blanket looks the same on both sides. It is knit in one piece with a built-in garter stitch border. Instructions for six blanket sizes. Makes a thoughtful gift for a new baby, or a lightweight throw to enjoy season after season.

The geometric pattern in this blanket design reminds me of the seasonal rituals and annual traditions that are repeated once again each year… planting summer flowers, celebrating birthdays, reuniting with family at annual events, walking through crunchy fall leaves, baking favorite seasonal recipes, listening to holiday songs, and toasting the new year.
DIRECTIONS FOR SIX BLANKET SIZES:
Approximate sizes after blocking…
Baby: 27” wide x 29.5” long
Small: 30.5” wide x 33” long
Medium: 34” wide x 36.5” long
Large: 40” wide x 47” long
XL: 47” wide x 54” long
XXL: 50” wide x 61” long
Finished size may vary depending on yarn weight and gauge used.
Any of the sizes may be made longer by adding pattern repeats. Each pattern repeat adds about 3.5” to the length of the blanket. Pattern includes estimates for additional yardage needed to make each size longer.
WORSTED #4 WEIGHT YARN:
Baby: 750 - 780 yards
Small: 950 - 980 yards
Medium: 1180 - 1230 yards
Large: 1800 - 1850 yards
XL: 2400 - 2500 yards
XXL: 2900 - 3000 yards
Be sure to buy additional yarn if you plan to add length to your project.
I used Berroco Modern Cotton worsted #4 weight yarn in the ‘Warbler’ colorway. I would describe this yarn as “light“ worsted. It has great stitch definition and the results are lovely!
This pattern will work well with many worsted #4 weight yarns. The pattern may also be used with DK #3 weight yarns, as well as slightly heavier yarns.
The stitch pattern shows best in a solid-color yarn with good stitch definition.
GAUGE:
Pattern stitch with US size 6 needles: approximately 20 stitches & 28 rows = 4”
Exact gauge is not essential. This stitch pattern looks best with fairly tight stitches.
I used US size 6 knitting needles. Choose the needle size that gives the best appearance with your yarn and your knitting tension.
A different gauge may require more or less yarn and impact the finished size of the project.
NEEDLES:
The blanket is knit flat, in one piece, back and forth on circular knitting needles in order to accommodate the large number of stitches.
SKILL LEVEL: Easy for a confident knitter
You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends.
Blocking of finished knitting is highly recommended. Please see my blog post for step-by-step tips and photos.
This pattern uses standard U.S. knitting terms.
Written pattern with row by row instructions.
