This is my slightly-bigger version of a quick-and-easy, reversible afghan square from 1880 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, Vol. 1. The original pattern is also in 1988 Hewitt and Daley’s Motifs, Borders and Trims in Classic Knitted Cotton. I added 16 knit rows (8 rows on each end) to the square to make the proportions a little nicer and I changed the edge stitches for subtler seams. Most of the square is simple garter stitch.
When worked to gauge and after blocking, the individual motifs are just under 4 inches square and take about 2 hours to knit.

Skills needed: cast on, slip purl-wise, knit, purl, yarn to back (ytb), yarn over and k2tog.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able thread/yarn will work. Make a swatch to check size and appearance.

About 23 yards of #10 crochet cotton thread will make a 4” square in the stated gauge.
