Man’s calf-length socks with 2x2 rib, knitted top down or toe up on 4 dpns, a full and separate pattern being provided for each. Either pattern could be adapted for 2 circular needles or magic loop by an experienced knitter. Both toe-up and cuff-down patterns feature a heel with heel/sole flap. An alternative German short row heel is included in the introduction. Foot length and leg length are infinitely adjustable.

Although this was designed for a man, the pattern could also fit a woman with high instep or larger leg width: choose a gorgeous colour and adjust the leg length to make it feminine.

The size samples were made for models with foot length 9.5in (S-M navy), 10.5in (L grey) and 11in (XL blue-pink stripes) with ankle/leg widths in proportion. The stretchy ribbing allows for more width in the foot/leg than an equivalent sock in stockinet. It also feels warmer in winter because the ribbing traps warm air. The 2 x 2 ribbing does not feel tight if you have chosen the right size, but will stay up without a cuff due to its natural clinginess, although an optional cuff is included in the pattern.

Requirements

  • Yarn: 100g of any 4 ply sock yarn. This is sufficient for a calf-length sock in S-M and L sizes, or an ankle sock in size XL.
  • Needles: 4 dpns or two circulars. Metric: 2.75mm; UK and Canadian size 12; US size 2
  • Stitch markers
  • Row Counter

This is a fully-written pattern.
