Ribbed and cabled women’s socks, designed to nudge or improve the pooling possibilities of some Wollmeise multicoloured sock yarns. Includes two separate written patterns for cuff-down and toe-up versions, both patterns in women’s medium and large size.
Note: Pooling in this context refers to the tendency of multicoloured, space-dyed yarns to show pools or patterns of colour when they are knitted up with certain stitch-numbers per row. With Wollmeise yarns you may get a spiral of colours.Yarns other than Wollmeise are not expected to pool with this sock pattern.

Sizes
Women’s medium and large. The medium size fits a medium or small women’s foot and slim leg. The large size fits a medium or large women’s foot and medium leg; it is also designed to fit over jeans, and to be worn as a boot sock. Foot and leg length are adjustable by knitting more or fewer rows in the foot, and more or fewer panel repeats in the leg.

Gauge
Medium size: 8.5 sts per inch (34 sts per 4in) on 2.25 - 2.5mm needles
Large size: 7 sts per inch (28 sts per 4in) on 2.75mm needles

Requirements

  • (MC) for cuff and foot 100g/313m (342yd) of plain colour 4ply Wollmeise sock yarn
  • (MULTI) contrast multicolour for leg panel and decorative features 60g/187m (204yd) of 4ply Wollmeise sock yarn
  • Yarn substitution: Any Wollmeise 80/20 twin colours could be substituted. Wollmeise 100% merino 4ply fingering yarn could be combined or substituted, although it may eventually be subject to wear on the footsole and heel. Note that all the Wollmeise multicoloured yarns will pool in unexpected ways or perhaps not at all, because they are hand-dyed – however this design is intended to increase the likelihood of pooling.
  • Needles: 4 dpns for cuff-down or toe-up version. An experienced knitter could substitute a pair of circulars for either version. Metric: size 2.25, 2.5mm for medium; 2.75mm for large. UK and Canadian: size 13 (med); size 12 (large) US: size 1-2 (med); size 2 (large)
  • 3 stitch markers, row counter, stitch holders

The pattern includes a stitch-pattern chart.for the medium size.
