This pattern is for a mid-length fingerless glove. It is a tribute to the orange roughy fish and part of the “Sustain the Sea” collection: A series of free patterns released over the next few months and designed to highlight marine sustainability.

I have selected a ‘scale’ pattern to highlight its fishy tribute, with the seed stitch thumb further emphasising a marine nature. The stretchy bind off hints at fins.

These gloves are knitted to a tighter than normal sock gauge to lessen the likelihood of stretching from wear. They embrace the arm like a second skin, and will keep you nice and snug on those crisp autumn and winter mornings

Suggesed skill level: Intermediate (familiarity with knitting in the round and following charts will be helpful)

Sizing: One size to fit the average woman’s arm. 25cm/10” long and approx. 18cm/7” around, worn with between 0 – 2” of negative ease.

Notions: 2.25mm (US1) DPNs and two stitch markers

Yarn suggestion: 2 x 50g hanks Knitsch 100% New Zealand merino sock yarn in Charlemange. This sample was knitted in Fibre Alive Merino Mania in Orange Roughy (a one-off colour).

Examples of suitable international alternatives of the right weight are Koigu KPPM, Madelinetosh Tosh Sock or a BFL high twist sock yarn. Any substitute yarn should contain a high percentage of wool in order to accommodate the snug nature of these gloves. The high twist yarn has also been selected for its energy and strength. Otherwise spun yarn may not give you the same stitch definition as you see in the picture
