The inspiration for this pattern came with the question What can I make from one skein of the aran yarn from the seaweed-eating sheep if the Orkney island of North Ronaldsay? The answer was this pattern leaflet of hat and fingerless mitts in two typically Orkney stitch patterns.

This coolie (the Orkney term for a close-fitting beanie) makes use of a common Orkney gansey pattern. Both sides of the pattern can be used as the outside, so finish the items carefully and they will be reversable.
