Now available as a self-published pattern, including instructions to make an Outsider Shawl in double-knit weight yarn.

The Outsider Shawl takes its inspiration from Aino-Maija Metsola’s 2016 cover design for a new edition of Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own.
This is a piece of writing that has long enthused me, and I have recently discovered the importance of having, if not a room, then at least a space, of one’s own. This space might be your favourite knitting chair, or it might simply be about ‘holding a space’ for yourself and finding time for some selfcare, which hopefully includes doing some knitting!

The shawl is knitted on the bias, starting at one corner, and working down towards the ribbed edging. There is a wide border of rib along the side of the shawl, which is established first before the main lace patterning of the body begins. Finally, the bottom edge is worked in a wide rib, featuring large dramatic eyelets within the purl stitches. You can work the main lace pattern and the bottom edge border from the written instructions or the chart, whichever you prefer.
