The inspiration for the Overlapping Leaves Cowl design was from the Japanese book Knitting Patterns Book 300 Lace (now out of print). The cowl top and bottom borders feature mock lace cable stitch between columns of decorative slipped sts (aka tuck stitches). The main pattern is curvaceous columns of leaves that overlap each other. Each leaf is shaped by lacy centers and a triple decrease worked on the inside leaf edge.

Leafy columns are bordered on either side by a simple 4-st pattern of 1-1 RC patterning. This vertical border gently follows the curve of the leaves, and extends into the beginning and ending border sections (see Version B – Lilac, on left). Detail of Version A, main pattern (tall – Evergreen), also on left.

Included with the pattern are step-by-step instructions with photos for working the Japanese stitch symbols for Mock Lace Cables and Decorative Slipped / Tuck Stitches.

Pattern was professionally tech edited by Robin Melanson.
