Sylvia Pankhurst was an extraordinary British suffragette and advocated for women’s rights. In 1903, she co-founded the Women’s Social and Political Union with her mother and sister and used her artistic talent to create posters and banners for the cause. Pankhurst was also a staunch advocate for social justice, workers’ rights, anti-fascism, and anti-colonialism. She documented the struggles of working-class people and oppressed groups in countries such as Ethiopia and China and traveled extensively throughout her life.

This pattern captures just a slice of her greatness with an artistic ribbed textured sock. I recommend using a yarn similar to Opal or Regia 4ply and highly recommend West Yorkshire Spinners 4ply as it would fit this pattern. You’ll want a lighter fingering with a tight twist. If you want it to stand out, lean towards lighter colors that won’t compete with the stitch pattern.

Gauge: 8 stitches/inch on 2.25 mm (US 1) circular needles.

Sizing: 1 (2,3) - which fits a foot circumference of (unstretched) 7 inches (7.5 inches, 8 inches) around.

Yarn: This pattern would look great in lighter colors that won’t compete with the stitch pattern in solids, tonals, semi-solids, and light speckles. Regia, Opal, or West Yorkshire Spinners 4ply would be perfect for this pattern. 100 grams.

Sample: Regia Extra Twist Merino in Natural 230 yards/skein 50g 75% Merino/ 25% Nylon.

Materials:
-US 1 (2.25) circular knitting needles (or size needed to get gauge), I recommend at least 32 inches (my preferred length). You can substitute DPNs and 9-inch circulars for circulars as well and I’ll show you how.
-100 grams of fingering-weight sock yarn.
-Stitch marker or locking stitch marker (optional)
-Ruler or measuring tape.
-Darning needle.
-Sock blockers to photograph your socks once you’re done! (optional).

Note: This pattern is written for magic loop, but can easily be changed to DPNs. Use 2 needles for N1, and another 2 for N2. If you’re using 9-inch circulars, there will be notes throughout to guide you.
