You will need sport weight yarn with one main color and up to seven patch colors. The number of colors is up to you, but the total yardage for patches would be approximately 2375 yds
Main color: 1075 yds
Two patch colors 500 yds each
Five patch colors 275 yds each

Row 1: dc in 3rd ch from hook and each ch across (ch 2 does not count as a st here or throughout), turn 38)
Row 2: ch 2, BLO dc, FLO dc across, turn (38)
Repeat Row 2 until swatch measures at least 6 inches

4” square should be approximately 25 st and 12 rows in pattern
