The original pattern was published by Mary Card, in Chart No 88, in the English series, in the late 1930s. It consists of 2 pieces. The main oval centerpiece and a complementary smaller, circular doily. These pieces were originally intended to be worked in size 100 weight cotton crochet thread.

This pattern can be worked by anyone who knows how to do the basic filet stiches of open block, solid block, and lacet.

I have re-charted the original pattern so that it is easier to read. There are two versions. One is the original pattern with open blocks around the edge. The other has a half-digonal block which smooths the edge. You can choose which set of charts to use.

There are complete stitch definitions for all of the filet stitches plus options for fancier filet stitches. Again, it’s your choice so that you can customize your Peacock and Clematis Set.

As noted above, the original was meant to be made in a very small thread. I have made my samples in Turkey #50 and US #30. I like to choose the smallest hook I am comfortable with using for the weight thread. The larger your hook, the larger your piece is going to be. The larger your thread, the larger your piece is going to be.

The only gauge that you need to follow is that you are square. Your rows = columns. Filet should always be square (pre-block). Filet is worked firmly and not loosely. These are not garments and so have no need to be flexible.

The pattern is written for a traditional 4-stitch block. It can be worked in a 3-stitch block which would make the pieces much smaller. Instructions are not given for the 3-stitch block.

There are written instructions to get you started and then move you to working completely from the charts.

Read through the pattern first and print only what you need to print. It is written in sections to make printing easier.
