A Call to Needles

Pears with a purpose
Over many years, I have probably engaged in most every type of needlework except tatting. (Master of none - always learning) Current favorite is knitting because it tends to brings me peace and sanity.
I now consider myself a Craftivist, having participated in the Pussyhat Project, the Welcome Blanket Project(still going strong), The Violet Protest, and many others.
If you prefer to keep your knitting separate from your politics, this is still a great little pear pattern. Instead of connecting the pears with an I-cord, just stop the cord at stem length.

I designed this project during Trump’s first impeachment, when the Senate was preparing to vote to indict or acquit. The vote would be close. There were reports that three republican senators were considering voting guilty. One of them was my senator from Ohio.
I’m a big fan of the double entendre and felt it was time to find a way to get our elected officials to really hear what we’re saying. My first “Pair of Pears” went to my Senator, reminding him to be brave and put country and constitution over party politics. I sent two more pairs to the other senators considering a vote to convict.
Of the three I gifted, only Romney voted to convict. Did my pears influence him? We’ll never know.
The “Pears with a Purpose” pattern includes a template for a letter to enclose when you knit, crochet or sew your pears and send them off to your elected representative(s), even state or local level, school board member, etc. This can be a non-partisan effort. People on all points of the political spectrum often have difficulty getting their reps to really hear them.
Since we often describe levels of courage by referring to genitals of steel, try making them in a silver, or sparkly light gray yarn. Send them to someone who HAS put country over party or committed an act of political courage. Even for women, who carry those pears a little higher, where they are more visible and exposed.
I would love to see pics of your Pears and how you “purposed” them.
If you prefer crocheting over knitting, and search Ravelry for pear patterns, there are also many crocheted versions.
