Pearson Gloves
I have collected vintage knitting patterns, magazines, and books for many years, intrigued both by the designs and the knitting and social history they contain. One of the first knitting history books I purchased was published in 1984 and was called Michael Pearson’s Traditional
Knitting. This book looked at traditional knitting practices around the British Isles, focusing mainly on Aran, gansey, and Fair Isle knitting.
This book alerted me to the vast amount of social history woven into knitting and began my lifelong fascination with the subject. For my Pearson glove pattern, I wanted to celebrate his work by creating a design inspired by the many colourwork charts and the history he recorded, whilst at the same time putting my own stamp on the design and providing knitters with a fun knitting challenge.
Because of the complexity of the patterning, differing gauges are used to create the three glove sizes. Finger and thumb lengths should be determined by measuring the intended wearer’s hands and working the fingers to the right length.
Finished measurements
A: Cuff circumference: 7 (7.5, 8) inches/18 (19, 20) cm
B: Cuff length: 2.25 (2.5, 2.75) inches/6 (6.5, 7) cm
C: Hand circumference above thumb gusset:
8 (8.5, 9.25) inches/20 (21.5, 23) cm
