Penumbra
I designed this shawl to show off some of my favorite color gradients. And the process was so pleasant … and addictive … that I am now working on my third (erm … fourth!). It’s about time for me to put this out there so that you can have as much fun as I’ve been having
Construction:
Knitting begins at shawl center with Emily Ocker’s cast-on. Lace is worked flat, increasing outwards to form a symmetrical triangle. Garter stitch begins while increasing continues.
Once the center has reached its full width, half the stitches are put on hold while Side 1 is worked on the bias (increases on one edge and decreases on the other.
Nearing the end, short rows bring the side to a straight ninety-degree finish.
Side 2 is picked up from held stitches and worked as for Side 1, but with reverse patterning and shaping.
Size: 18” wide by 64 (80)“ long.
Gauge: 17 sts and 34 rows = 4” in garter stitch using size US 6 needles.
Yarn: Spun Right Round Classic Sock, or any (or all!) Sunday Knits 3 ply (light sport weight) yarns.
Substitute any light sport or fingering weight yarn that works nicely to gauge: 800 (1000) yds main color (MC), and 350 (440) yds contrast color. (CC).
Speckled yarn sample in Spun Right Round’s Classic Sock, with MC in roughly equal parts each: Snowblind, Chimes, Seahorse, Deep End, Dirty Denim and The Lonely; and CC in Snowblind.
Pink sample shown with MC in a custom-dyed Sunday Knits gradient ranging from French Pink to Indigo, and CC in Sunday Knits Eden Mist.
Red sample shown with MC in 6 Sunday Knits colors: Eden Violet, Eden Aster, Eden Garnet, Angelic Tomato, Eden Paprika & Eden Curry; CC in Nirvana Sage.
Green sample shown with MC in 5 Sunday Knits colors: Eden Lagoon, Nirvana Sage, Eden Moss, Nirvana Dill & Nirvana Turmeric; CC in Nirvana Amethyst.
Sunday Knits yarns available at sundayknits.com.
Needles & notions: Size US 6 (4 mm), size G (4 mm) crochet hook for cast- on, stitch markers.
Skills used: Emily Ocker’s cast-on, German short rows, Russian T splice for joining and ending strands (optional), sewn bind-off.
All techniques are explained or linked to tutorials.
Pattern includes: Written instructions, lace stitch patterns in both written and charted formats.
