“How many stitches do I need to cast on for a scarf?” and “How long does it need to be?” are two of the questions that beginner knitters often ask.

This pattern will give you the skills to dive into your yarn stash, grab a set of needles and knit a scarf or wrap to suit any recipient.

Working with your own needle choice and gauge you’ll learn how to:

  • Take body measurements and calculate how wide and long you want a scarf or shawl
  • Caculate a cast on for any stitch pattern
  • Work until you have the appropriate measurements

Yarn and Yardage
This will depend on your choice of yarn and gauge and size, but as a guide allow at least the following amounts for a basic rectagular scarf:

150-600m/140-550m

You can use any yarn that pleases you for this project.

The sample shown is a toddler scarf in DK acrylic yarn 1.75 ounces/48 grams.

Sizes
The intention is that you work a custom size based on your own measurements. Standard size information is provided in the ebook for those who are gift or charity knitting.
