These headbands can be customised with a wide range of motifs and stitch patterns. Instructions for four different variations are given here, but there are lots of other ideas you could try.

Three sizes are included, which are roughly to fit babies, children and adults. However, individual head sizes can vary greatly, so it would be best to measure around the wearer’s head first and adjust the length of the band accordingly. Making the band about 2.5cm/1in shorter than the head measurement should ensure that it stretches to fit snugly. The gauge (tension) is unimportant, as the band is knitted to the required length irrespective of the row count.

For a child’s or adult’s headband, the motif can be sewn onto a corsage pin – this gives the choice of wearing it either pinned to the headband, or separately on a lapel or bag. For a baby’s headband, the motif should be sewn onto the band seam to avoid possible injury to the wearer.

Note: “Pick & mix” is a British term for a method of dispensing and selling confectionery, known in the USA as “penny candy” or “loose candy”.
