Picnic at Laurelhurst Hat
Sizing: Adult Medium suitable for a 21” head circumference. A slightly smaller or larger hat can be acheived with a smaller or larger set of needles respectively.
Suggested Yarn: Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok Worsted -or- any light worsted or heavy DK weight yarn or combinations of yarn which provide gauge in a desirable fabric. I recommend a slightly round yarn in a medium-hued color to maximize the WOW factor in this design. But frankly, I think it would work with just about any kind of gaugeable yarn.
Yardage: Approximately 170 yards.
Gauge: 22 sts x 32 rows per 4” (10cm) in the main fabric, diamond pattern
Suggested Needles: Size US 5 and 7
Notions: 14 stitch markers total (highly recommended but not required: 7 markers of one color, 6 markers of another color, and a unique marker for the beginning of the round), tapestry needle, & scissors.
Techniques to Know/Learn:
Ribbing
Knitting in the Round
Slipped Stitches
Decreasing Stitches
Cable Stitches
Spiral Patterning (adjusting to stitches moving across the BOR)
(OPTIONAL): Magic Loop
Pattern Notes:
This pattern produces slipped stitches spiraling around the hat in opposing directions and moving over and under each other to make a pleasing woven diamond shape.
Due to the way that the slipped stitches spiral in opposite directions around the body of the hat there comes a time, 1 round in every 16, where the slipped stitches move across the beginning of the round.
This ”movement” across the BOR makes the usual pattern repeat instruction BREAK! The pattern includes instructions on how to handle this without distorting the spiral pattern of the hat.
