Three times each day during spring and summer, I leave the farm and take to the forest path.

Together with my flock of Grå Trønder sheep, we follow along the pathway and climb the mountain.

We walk deeper and deeper into the forest until we reach the forest glade, where my little flock frolics and grazes among the forest trees.

The Picnic on the Path – A Blanket Hap is a comforting piece to wrap around your shoulders as you climb up the mountain. Once you arrive at the top, the Hap can be used as a blanket to spread out onto the forest moss. Perfect to lay out a lovely afternoon tea.

This rustic blanket Hap is light, warm and drapey. It is a traditional square shaped, farm Hap. It is knit from the center, in the round. You increase the size of the Hap from the center, outward. This creates four sides, divided by a big farm X.

There is a simple eyelet lace knit within the rounds, to create interest during the knitting. I have chosen this simple lace to reflect the dappled sunlight that filters through the birch leaves in the trees overhead.

A beautiful, simplistic, birch tree leaf, lace edging finishes the border of this blanket Hap. This lace motif is placed in between a rustic texture, which reflects the bark of the pine trees that I sit among, while enjoying a picnic, watching over my little flock.

The blanket Hap is bound off with an extra stretchy bind off technique, that when blocked, creates a drapey, tapered, delicate edging - finishing the Hap off beautifully.

This design was inspired by the many journeys I have made along the forest path together with my sheep and all of the afternoon picnics that I have enjoyed there.

Thank you for joining me on the forest path!

Please note:
This pattern has been professionally tech editied and knit for clarity. It is in written form, row by row and the lace edging is charted.
