As a child, it seemed Pierrot clows were everywhere - they were beautiful, tragic clowns. This design is therefore nostalgic to me and as one of my earliest designs, I’m now offering it for free to share my joy and love of the Pierrot clown with you.

Pierrot the Little Clown is an amigurumi (crochet) pattern for intermediate crocheters. If you have made amigurumi before, you will find the pattern easy to follow and I have included pictures, yarn and hook recommendations to assist.

Pattern is written in English using US terms and my finished Pierrot measures 24cm (9 1/2 inches) tall. Your crochet tension, yarn and hook size used will determine the size of your finished item.

Difficulty: Intermediate, US terminology

You will need:

  • 2.5mm hook/C-2 (US)
  • 8ply yarns/DK or Light Worsted > 70g yarn in WHITE, less than 50g yarn in BLACK
  • PINK yarn or thread to embroider
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Polyester toy stuffing
  • Stitch marker (optional)

Abbreviations:

  • ch = chain
  • MR = magic ring
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • inc = single crochet increase (2 sc in one stitch)
  • dec = decrease (sc 2 together)
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • BLO = back loops only
  • (..) = repeat the space in brackets the given number of times
  • .. = total number of stitches

Notes:

  • Amigurumi is usually stitched in the round and a yarn with no stretch is best.
  • When changing colour, pull through the new colour on the stitch before you need it. This will ensure that you have the correct colour yarn on the hook for the upcoming stitch.
  • Generally, the hook you use for amigurumi will be a smaller than for other crochet as you want the stitches tight.
  • I’ve used the following yarns: o WHITE = Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Col. 401 Paper White o BLACK = Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Col. 402 Pure Black
  • I have embroidered the eyes, please ensure that there are no loose fittings.
