Knit this textured, nicely-finished string bag! It has a very textured lace motif, and if you knit it in brown it’s sort of like a pinecone aesthetic. You could also put pine cones in it, I guess, but that’s up to you.

The lace is gratifying because while it’s a little complicated for a market bag, it does end up giving this project a nice continuous spiral-in-the-round look.

Anyway, it’s a useful bag! You could probably put stuff in it if you make one. The sample has 7”/18cm handles, but there’s a range of what feels comfortable to individuals—feel free to knit these shorter or longer, if you want.

Materials:

  • 325-350 yds Valley Yarns Valley Cotton 3/2
  • 1 set of DPNs and one 16” circular needle in US8/5.0mm, or size needed for gauge
  • 1 16” circular needle in US 6/4.0mm, or about two sizes down from size needed for gauge
  • 1 set of DPNS in US 5/3.75mm, or three sizes down from size needed for gauge
  • tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • crochet hook sized to suit yarn (B/2.25mm or preference)
  • smooth spare yarn for provisional cast-on
  • removable stitch markers

Gauge:
Gauge is 16 sts and 24 rows over 4”/10cm of lightly blocked garter stitch, worked in the round. This is taken from the base of the bag, where knitting is worked with the largest needles. Please be sure to check your gauge.

Measurements:
As shown, when flat with no tension, this bag measures about 12.5”/32cm across and 14.5”/34cm tall, excluding handles.
