Pineapple Tart Amigurumi
The amigurumi was inspired by the pineapple tart, a bite-sized snack beloved in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. The pineapple tart consists of a shortcrust pastry base topped with a pineapple jam that is made by slowly reducing grated pineapple with sugar and a mix of spices (cinnamon, star anise, cloves).
Also known as kueh tair to Peranakans, kuih tart or tart nenas to Malays, and kue nastar to Indonesians, the pineapple tart was created from the confluence of local, Portuguese and Dutch colonial influences in the Malay archipelago. Today, it has become a popular festive staple in Southeast Asia, especially during Chinese New Year and Hari Raya.
Pattern Notes
This pattern makes an open-faced pineapple tart amigurumi. It consists of 2 parts, each part is worked in the round, then stitched together.
It is fairly easy and quick to make but may be a little challenging for new beginners as it involves making a scalloped edge using double crochet stitches (similar but not the same as the shell stitch).
