Someone once came into my Skipton studio and asked if I designed long socks. At the time I didn’t – but I do now!

I love knitting socks in a thicker yarn and, by that, I mean aran weight. I enjoy knitting 4-ply socks, but I absolutely adore aran-weight ones. There’s nothing more comforting than pulling on a long, cosy pair of hand-knitted socks.

Knitted in soft Bluefaced Leicester, they’re perfect for curling up on the sofa on a winter’s evening. Knitted in Jacob Aran, they’re ideal for pulling on inside your wellies before heading out for a crisp, snowy walk.

For me, these socks are the very definition of a cosy night in – curtains closed, a good series to watch, snacks within reach and nowhere to be for a while. Lovely.

CONSTRUCTION
Knitted on double pointed needles in the round in one piece from the cuff down.

TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, double pointed needles, in the round, decreasing, grafting stitches together. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your stitches: three needle cast off.

YARN
Two 100g hanks of P &J Yorkshire Yarn Bluefaced Leicester Aran in shade A and one 100g hank in shade B.
100% Bluefaced Leicester wool, 175m/191yds per 100g

SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
4.5mm set of four double pointed needles.

GAUGE (tension)
19 stitches and 26 rows to 10cm square over stocking stitch. I obtained this gauge with 4.5mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
To fit UK size 5 or desired foot length as highlighted in the pattern.
