The inspiration for this pattern has a bittersweet story. Back in 2018, Dan and I drove from Maryland to Arkansas to pick up two little beagles. We had wanted puppies for years at that point, so they were a dream come true. Of course, we named them after the two hobbits in Lord of the Rings that were always causing some sort of trouble, Pippin and Merry. They would wake me up crying at 5am wanting to go on a walk, so I would take them and then fall asleep snuggled up with them on the couch when we got back inside. I have so many cute memories of them!

As the years passed, Pippin and Merry grew as fast as our love for them did, but tragically, Pippin’s life was cut short in February 2022. So this design is a tribute to my silly sweet boy who always loved to play catch and sit in my lap while I knit. He was there for me during the hardest time of my life, and I am so grateful that I got to love him even for just a little while.

Erin from Coast to Coast Yarn Co. was so kind as to design a special custom colorway in his memory, named “For Pippin.” I wanted something subtle and sweet, and she did such a beautiful job capturing his essence in shades of ivory and pale beige. We chose a single-ply merino/linen blend as the base for softness, lightness, and drape, and it certainly lived up to our high expectations. I know you will enjoy working with this yarn as much as I did. She will be adding this new base to her shop in several beautiful colorways on the evening of 8/31. Follow her on Instagram to make sure you don’t miss out!
