This hat pattern is dedicated to Kim Nixon whose friendship was cut short and whose beautiful, passionate presence is sorely missed…
My friend Kim came into my shop one day and asked if I would knit a hat for her. Of course, I would! But I actually felt a little nervous because I wanted it to be the most perfect, best hat ever! Before I could inquire as to what color, hat shape, and type of yarn she envisioned, she said:

“I’ve been given a few hats lately, and they’re beautiful, but my skin is so sensitive, I need something really soft and something that doesn’t fit too tight around my forehead because that’s also irritating and very uncomfortable.”

I could tell she didn’t want to seem ungrateful—I didn’t think she was…I was so happy that she’d said something. It was the first time anyone had ever given me specific guidelines to knit by…and I loved that. After all, I want to knit hats that are yes, practical, but also actually get worn and are comfortable as well as comforting. After Kim picked the yarn, I created Pizzazz with her specifications in mind…
Pizzazz is the perfect hat made-to-order! The brim is knit flat and can be adjusted to fit perfectly after completion—no guesswork. It can be worn low or pushed up a bit depending on individual needs. It lends itself to creative yarn and color combinations and is perfect for using up some of that gorgeous left-over yarn, which I know you’ve got stashed somewhere safe…and for a little more Pizzazz Personality, just attach a fun button, pin, or knitted/crochet flower to the brim!
The pattern serves as a guideline for your imagination! As long as you stick to the gauge, feel free to create your own Pizzazz any stripe, color and texture you want. Enjoy!!
