Pluto is a companion shawl to The Planets Collection, a collection of shawl patterns inspired by the orchestral suite The Planets by Gustav Holst. Naomi Parkhurst’s technique for embedding words into knitting patterns was used to create a lace pattern out of the word Pluto. This pattern works well with solids, gradients, tonals or lightly speckled yarns. While the sample was knit with sport weight yarn, this pattern could also be worked in lace, fingering, or light DK weight yarn.

The sample Pluto used Collins Sport from the Fiberists:

Materials
Yarn - Collins Sport from The Fiberist, 385 yds/352 m; two skeins each in two contrasting colors. Sample used Obsidian (Color A) and Smokey Quartz (Color B). Or approx 450 yds/411 m of Color A and approx. 770 yds/704 m of Color B in sport weight yarn.

Needles - US size 4 (3.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge below. 32”/80 cm circular recommended. If you are using a yarn different from the sample, use a needle that gives you a fabric you like.

Gauge - 21 sts by 28 rows equals 4”/10 cm in Section/Chart A and B lace pattern, blocked. Gauge is not overly important as long as you are happy with the fabric.

Finished size - 61”/155 cm long and 21”/53 cm wide

Miscellaneous- darning needle for weaving in ends
